Pulling up outside the house Emma had shared with Gabe, I leave the engine running as I look inside. The sky is darkening, and most of the occupied houses have lights on. At the front of the residency, the police tape still stretches across the door, announcing to the world that something terrible happened here. It’s undisturbed, and everything else is dark. He's not here.

Next I drive to Brent Williams's house. I have a terrible feeling that I'm not going to like what I find. The fact he hasn't spoken to his daughter on the day she was released from hospital sits heavily in my stomach. Gabe was released a few days ago. Would he really carry out his threat to hurt Emma's family while he is out on bail? Is he that crazy?

Again, there are no lights on when I pull up out the front of Mr. Williams’s house. However, this time I cut the engine and go to the front door. I can hear the ocean in the distance, and the breeze blows lightly through my hair as I walk up the stone pebble path. They crunch under my feet with each step and that heavy sense of dread continues to build the closer I get.

I knock on the door, and as expected, there is no answer. “Mr. Williams?" I call out, moving to the side to try and peer through the window.

There is no response.

I move back to the door, and reach out to try the handle. It's unlocked.

Twisting it in my hand, I push the door open and step inside, calling out for Mr. Williams again.

“It’s Father Braden, sir, are you in here?”

Still no answer.

I reach to the side of the door and feel the wall for a switch before hitting it, filling the room with light. My eyes scan the wooden cabin, filled to the brim with an excessive amount of furniture and ornaments – the kinds of things you find in a variety of different men's clubs. Nothing really matches.

“Mr. Williams?”

I move through the house, opening door after door, calling for him over and over again. There’s something inside me telling me that he’s here, and that I need to keep going, and when I reach the door to the main bathroom, my heartbeat kicks up a notch. I know in the very depths of my bones that he’s in there.

Pushing the door open, I flick on the light, my eyes immediately finding him.

Crossing myself as my heart fills with sorrow, I crouch down beside the overfilled bathtub where Brent Williams lies, drowned. “To what purpose, Lord? I can’t imagine this was part of your plan at all.”
